Someone close-by will have something you can actually handle and maybe try at first. Plus if they are already familiar with a weapon, their help will be invaluable. As for home defense, the best round is the 00-buckshot. Large chunks, but still getting a spread. It'll knock somebody down hard, which simple birdshot wont' necessarily do.
